Our Relationship with Europe
The debate on Monday, 24th March, in Westminster Hall was well-attended by colleagues from across the political spectrum. While I have always been pro-Europe and understand the arguments for rejoining, the government’s position remains that we will not seek to re-enter the EU. I appreciate this may be disappointing, but I want to reassure you that under this Labour government, our relationship with our European allies is stronger than ever.
Since taking office, we have been working hard to repair and rebuild trust with Europe, ensuring Britain is a respected and influential partner once again. As part of our commitments:
• We remain in the European Court of Human Rights, demonstrating our commitment to shared values and human rights protections.
• Keir Starmer has prioritized rebuilding relationships with European leaders, ensuring Britain is once again at the heart of discussions on security, trade, and economic cooperation.
• Foreign Secretary David Lammy has led efforts to strengthen security and economic ties, holding the first high-level meetings with European counterparts in two years.
We are already seeing real, positive outcomes from this renewed cooperation:
• £250 million Czech investment in Rolls-Royce and £600 million Polish investment in UK operations, boosting jobs and innovation.
• A revenue acceleration loan to support Ukraine and stronger sanctions against Russia, made possible through closer collaboration with European partners.
• Economic resilience: The UK is forecasted to outperform major European economies such as Spain, Italy, and Germany within 15 years, with the OBR predicting Britain will remain the world’s 6th-largest economy by 2039.
I know there are still challenges ahead, and people will have different perspectives on the best path forward. But I firmly believe that this Labour government is proving we can rebuild relationships, strengthen our global standing, and deliver real benefits for Britain. We are just getting started, and I truly appreciate you taking the time to share your views.
